Q What is Pond Mountain? A It is a pond at the summit of a mountain. The actual rise of land is 1,755' according to topographical maps and was once considered the highest point in the Ozarks. |
| Q How does the water get there?
A That was always part of the mystery. The level never changes as there is a constant run-off through a thicket of bamboo. The Pond is quite large and about 15' deep. Because of the constant overflow and the cold pockets it has to be spring fed. There is a very long dock, some nice rock work around one side and a rock bridge over the end with the overflow. In the summer you can't see through the surrounding trees, but in the winter you can see almost forever. Q What is its history? A It was considered a place of beauty and interest, and was mentioned on many turn of-the-century brochures as "A great place for picnics and horseback rides." For many years it was owned by Carl Koch, the man who invented the Toni Home Permanent. It was sold in 1992 and is now called Pond Mountain Lodge and Resort. It is private property out two miles on HWY 23 South. © 1993 by Susan Schaefer. All Rights Reserved. Information presented here is used with the permission of the author. | |
